Case Study
Implementation of FREE Separate Fax Line using VoIP

Issue

This change was an unexpected follow-on from the previous case study: Change of Broadband and Web Hosting Suppliers.

This client was using a combined phone/fax unit connected to the same BT phone line. However, they were unhappy with this setup due to answering fax calls and having to make sure the machine was set correctly.

Solution

As a result of switching broadband suppliers they were given a free VoIP (Voice over IP) phone line.

This type of phone line uses the internet to route calls rather than the traditional phone network and can result in cheaper call costs.

We were able to connect one of the client's existing Windows XP computers to this VoIP line by adding a cheap internal modem. Windows XP has in-built fax functionality and in addition to being a PC it is now operating as their fax machine - with the separate VoIP phone number.

Benefits

  • Separate fax and phone numbers, giving a more professional image
  • No more answering fax calls
  • No more missed faxes due to the machine being incorrectly set
  • By using the free VoIP line the client has saved a potential £10-£15 per month that an extra phone line could have cost
  • Using the Windows XP computer as a fax means less wasted paper and also faxes are now saved on the computer and backed up nightly
